Padlocks are some of the simplest locks there are. Padlocks are useful for a lot of different applications. Part of what makes them so appealing is their versatility. They can be used to lock just about anything, with minimum effort and brain-dead simple lock installation. Padlocks truly are the most versatile locks available, and when it comes to change lock it couldn’t be easier.
There are a variety of padlocks available on the market in a variety of styles and qualities. So, how do you know which ones are the best quality? Well, we’re about to tell you. Padlocks are far from the most complicated devices, but you do need to know a few things to make sure that you get the correct lock for your situation. First of all, you need to know whether the padlock will be used indoors or out. Locks that will be used outdoors need to be weatherised, rust-resistant and more rugged. Indoors that isn’t an issue. You also need to determine what you will be locking with this padlock.
Although lock installation for a padlock is easy, it is important to know where the locks will be placed and what they will be protecting in order to determine if you should spend more money on a high-quality lock with more security features or if a normal lock will be just fine. Knowing the probable location of the lock also also allows you to determine if you need a longer-than-normal shackle in order to allow the locks to fit in smaller places. This will also make it easier to change lock, when you need to.
You’ll also have to decide if you need a keyed lock, a combination lock, or even an electronic keypad padlock. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages. A keyed lock is simple, but you have to be able to keep track of the key (and if you plan lock installation for many areas, you could be overwhelmed by keys that all look similar). A combination lock requires you to be able to memorize the combination (writing it down is a big security no-no), but makes the lock invulnerable to skilled thieves who may be able to pick a keyed padlock (thankfully those types of thieves are in short supply these days). Lastly, make sure that the shackle is made of a high-quality metal that is very difficult to cut. Die-cast zinc, steel and boron steel shackles are some of the hardest to cut through.
